The SMES unit is designed to store electric energy in its superconducting magnetic coil. Controlling the firing angle of the converters feeding the unit changes the amount of energy supplied to (or received by) the SMES unit. This energy can be supplied to the power system as and when it is needed by appropriate control of the SMES unit.
